College Players and Exploitation

College Players Granted Right to Form Union

  1. I wonder whether unions could be sustainable as a model for making compensation for college athletes fairer.

A key concern is that there are such vast disparities in the abilities of college athletes. Unlike unions, where every auto worker contributes pretty much equally to the final product (at least within an order of magnitude), and no teamster can drive ten times faster or carry a hundred times as much freight, some college athletes can singlehandedly make the difference between their program being #15 and #1. Meanwhile, most other college athletes make only a small marginal contribution. Joining those disparate groups in a single union may prove problematic.
